In an interview with Candis magazine, actor Colin Farrell opened up about the difficult decision to place his son James, 21, into a long-term care institution.
Colin Farrell, 48, admitted his son James, 21, who suffers from Angelman syndrome, into a long-term care institution. He explained to Candis magazine why he made this tough decision.
“It’s complicated, some parents say, ‘I want to take care of my child myself,’ and I respect that,” said the actor from “The Penguin”.
Farrell explained that he fears what could happen to James if something unexpected were to happen to him or to Kim Bordenave, James’ mother.
“My greatest fear would be: what if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and God forbid, James’ mother, Kim, has a car accident and also dies, and James is left alone?” he said.
If that happened, Farrell explained, the state would take custody of James, and without a pre-established plan, they would have no decision-making power regarding his housing and care.

“We want to find a place where he can have a full and happy life, where he feels connected,” explained the star of “The Lobster”.
James Padraig Farrell suffers from Angelman syndrome, a neurogenetic disorder that affects the nervous system, causing developmental delays, speech difficulties, and balance issues.
In August 2024, Colin Farrell announced to People magazine that he had decided to create a nonprofit foundation to ensure that people with this condition and their families receive all the support and “assistance they need”.
“I want the world to be kind to James. I want the world to treat him with kindness and respect,” he said at the time.
